Immigration and Workers
Whether you're on the left or on the right, at least in the US and other Western countries, the implication that immigrants are stealing our jobs is so pervasive you would be forgiven for thinking it's some sort of basic fact. But...it's just not true.
From the US Congress to the American Business Immigration Coalition to CNBC to the Brookings Institute, analysis upon analysis repeatedly shows that immigrants are not stealing USian jobs. So why do so many people repeat it as though it's true?
The obvious answer is, of course, racism and xenophobia. That explains a bunch of it, especially as the immigrants we're talking about here are by-and-large Asian or Latinx. Banging on about 'them' stealing 'our' jobs creates a very clear dichotomy between the people who belong ('us') and the people who don't ('them').
But while that explains part of the issue, there is a very perverse incentive for companies to nominally be pro-immigration. These companies know that immigrants have less of a safety net and are generally more precarious, so they get them to work more and pay them less. There are, of course, also abuses that are enabled by the hiring of specifically undocumented workers.
The answer, then, is not to blame immigrants for taking our jobs (which isn't even true anyway), but rather to blame corporate greed for preferring to hire precarious workers. The answer is to fight for better labor protections so that immigrant workers are not as precarious as they currently are. Above all, form a union. Fighting (and negotiating) together gives everyone a better chance at a decent livelihood.
Remember all of this the next time you're told that immigrants are taking your jobs, and correct the record if you can.
